Common Fashion Crimes
We’re all guilty. Sometimes we’re lucky and realize it before
we leave the house but more often than not we go through the day
oblivious to our own sins of style. It’s not until we catch a
glimpse of our reflection in a store window or see a photo from
last year’s office picnic that we recoil and wonder “Eewwww!
What was I thinking?” Maybe an outfit you got on sale looks
rumpled and matronly. Fashion faux pas range from petty crimes
to major felonies. Although the fashion police don’t issue
citations, you might want to consider this a warning.
Keeping the cops of couture off your back and out of your closet
is simple. You don’t need to spend a fortune on your wardrobe or
radically change your style. Just follow these simple rules.
You’ll not only look great but your fashion record will be
spotless.
Wear fabrics that are appropriate. Save the linen and
seersucker for summer and spring. Wear wool blends in the
winter. Shiny, shimmery satins should come out after dark - not
at the office.
Emphasize your positives. Cinch a belt around your tiny
waist and leave your shirt untucked if you have a bit of a
tummy. Wear slim slacks and shorter skirts if you have terrific
long legs. Wear skirts that hit at the knee if your legs are a
bit chubby. Wear colors that flatter your skin, your hair, and
even your eyes.
Keep all your clothes in good repair. The same goes for
shoes and handbags. Scruffy shoes and a beat up bag will make
your entire ensemble look tired and sloppy.
Never wear hose with open toed shoes. The webbed look is
only attractive on ducks. Never, ever wear ankle bracelets under
pantyhose.
If you like wearing a thong make sure that you’re the only
one who knows. Keep your underwear hidden. That goes for bra
straps as well. Also, a good fitting bra with enough support can
make you look thinner and make your clothes fit better. It’s
well worth being fit by lingerie professional. Once you find a
smooth seamless bra that fits well, buy several in white, nude
and black.
Do not wear black underwear under light colored clothing.
Invest in a nude colored bra or camisole top to wear under white
blouses.
Make sure that your clothes fit properly. Hiding
perceived figure flaws under baggy clothes doesn’t make you look
thinner. Likewise, squeezing into a size eight when you are
rightfully a 10 emphasizes your lumps and bulges. Extend short
legs with longer pants. Petite women look taller with slacks
that break at the top of the foot.
Don’t go overboard on patterns or colors. Pick one
pattern to compliment your outfit. Stick to two or three (at the
most) colors in one outfit. More is just plain distracting.
Update your makeup and your hair every few years. Find
new products, try new colors, and ask your stylist for advice
and an honest opinion.
